About this work

Overview

Untitled is a 1999 print portfolio by Jannis Kounellis, comprising twelve etchings, drypoints, and aquatints, and four letterpress prints. The work is characterized by its simplicity and use of various printmaking techniques.

Subject & Meaning

The portfolio features a dominant image: a plain, light beige square with the single word 'Kounellis' printed in bold font. The emptiness of the work invites contemplation on the absence of traditional artistic elements, such as color or composition.

Technique & Style

Kounellis employed a range of printmaking techniques, including etching, drypoint, aquatint, and letterpress. The use of chiné collé and blind embossing adds texture and complexity to the work, although this is not immediately apparent in the dominant image.

Context

Kounellis was associated with the Arte Povera movement, which explored the materiality and process of art-making. This work reflects that interest, using printmaking techniques to create a minimalist and enigmatic piece.
