Since its completion, the portrait has been part of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp’s collection. The museum acquired the piece as a representative example of Portaels’ portraiture, preserving it within its holdings of Belgian and European art from the period.

Portaels, a Belgian painter active in genre scenes, biblical narratives, landscapes, and Orientalist subjects, also held prominent teaching positions at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent and the Académie Royale des Beaux‑Arts in Brussels.
