About this work

Overview

A black-and-white photograph mounted on a green card depicts a bronze statue of a dog.

Subject & Meaning

The statue shows a dog sitting on a low block, its head lowered as if sniffing, with a hunched body and tucked front paws. The simple collar is almost imperceptible amidst the folds of its neck.

Technique & Style

The bronze statue is characterized by smooth curves and rough patches where the metal was shaped, giving it a heavy and solid appearance.

History & Provenance

The photograph was part of a collection bequeathed by William Kineton Parkes in 1938. It was sent to Parkes in response to a questionnaire he distributed to sculptors during the 1920s.
