De Momper employs oil paint to balance warm and cool tonalities, using chiaroscuro to model forms and convey atmospheric depth. The landscape is rendered with meticulous detail, a hallmark of his practice, while the overall arrangement reflects the influence of Pieter Brueghel’s expansive, narrative vistas.

The painting entered the Alte Pinakothek’s holdings in the 19th century, where it has remained on public display. Its provenance prior to museum acquisition is not extensively documented, but it aligns with de Momper’s output for the Antwerp market during his active years in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.

At the turn of the 17th century, Flemish art was shifting from the stylized compositions of Mannerism toward a more observational approach to nature. De Momper’s work illustrates this transition, combining the decorative vigor of earlier Flemish landscapes with a growing interest in realistic spatial recession and atmospheric effects.
