After its completion, the self‑portrait entered the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, where it has remained in public view. Rebell’s career included studies under Michael Wutky at the Vienna Academy and subsequent appointments at courts in Milan and Naples, but this work stands as one of the few documented self‑representations from his later years.
