Reynolds employs a soft chiaroscuro, allowing the illuminated skin on the face and arms to emerge from a darker, leafy backdrop. The handling of light and shadow, together with delicate detailing of fabric and foliage, reflects the Rococo taste for elegance and decorative nuance while retaining the painter’s characteristic realism.

The portrait entered the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, as part of its 19th‑century acquisitions of British art. Its documented provenance traces back to the FitzPatrick family, confirming its original ownership before its transfer to the museum’s collection.

At the time of its execution Reynolds was a founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts and a proponent of the “Grand Style,” which sought to combine idealized composition with truthful likeness. This work illustrates his synthesis of academic ideals with the lighter, ornamental qualities favored in mid‑18th‑century portraiture.
