Toeput employs a layered approach to convey depth, using atmospheric perspective to soften distant forms and brighter, more saturated tones for nearer elements. The palette balances warm and cool hues, creating contrast that enhances the sense of three‑dimensional space, a hallmark of the period’s evolving chiaroscuro techniques.

After its creation in the late sixteenth century, the painting entered various private collections before being acquired by the Alte Pinakothek, where it has been displayed as part of the museum’s holdings of Northern European art from the Renaissance era.

As a Flemish artist who spent much of his career in Italy, Toeput blended Northern detail with Italian compositional strategies. His treatment of landscape and figural interaction informed later Flemish painters such as Joos de Momper and the van Valckenborch brothers, who adopted similar approaches to integrating architecture and nature.
