About this work

Overview

Created in 1516 by the Mantuan court painter Lorenzo Leonbruno, this oil on canvas presents a complex allegorical scene. The work, now part of the Pinacoteca di Brera collection, exemplifies the Mannerist tendency toward artificiality and tension. A central female figure dominates the composition, surrounded by a crowd that seems to tug and accuse her, generating a palpable sense of disorder.

Subject & Meaning

The composition depicts a woman in a flowing robe whose expression conveys distress as she is pulled in multiple directions by surrounding figures. Some point, others grasp, while a few remain passive observers. The arrangement suggests an allegory of slander or the capricious nature of Fortune, illustrating how reputation can be torn apart by conflicting forces and public scrutiny.

Technique & Style
Figures emerge from deep shadows, their forms elongated in a manner characteristic of Mannerist exaggeration.

Leonbruno employs a dark, chiaroscuro-inflected palette that heightens the drama of the scene. Figures emerge from deep shadows, their forms elongated in a manner characteristic of Mannerist exaggeration. The spatial setting—staircases and arches receding into gloom—adds depth while reinforcing the chaotic atmosphere, and the careful modeling of drapery demonstrates the artist’s skill with oil paint.

History & Provenance

Active in Mantua between 1506 and 1524, Leonbruno served the Gonzaga family, who commissioned several allegorical works from him. This particular painting remained in the Gonzaga collection before entering the public domain. It was eventually acquired by Milan’s Pinacoteca di Brera, where it has been displayed as part of the museum’s Renaissance holdings.
