About this work

Overview

Untitled is a 2010 work consisting of a series of sixteen digital prints produced collaboratively by Tracey Emin and Louise Bourgeois. The pieces are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, where they are displayed as a unit reflecting the artists’ joint exploration of the human form.

Subject & Meaning

Each print presents a fragmented female torso rendered without head or arms, its pink‑red skin marked by darker stains. A minimalist line drawing of a recumbent figure is embedded within the chest, suggesting an interior narrative or hidden presence that contrasts with the stark, disembodied surface.

Technique & Style

The images were generated digitally, then transferred to print, allowing precise control of colour and line. The background is a plain white field intersected by gestural black and gray strokes, while the torso’s surface combines smooth tonal areas with textured markings, merging photographic realism with painterly gestures.

History & Provenance

Created in 2010, the series was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art shortly after its completion. The collaboration marks a rare joint venture between two prominent contemporary artists, situating the prints within MoMA’s holdings of post‑2000 experimental print media.

Context

The work emerges from a period when both Emin and Bourgeois were investigating bodily representation and vulnerability. By excising limbs and head, the prints echo earlier feminist and psychoanalytic concerns, while the digital medium reflects the artists’ engagement with contemporary production methods.
