About this work

Overview

The work is a black‑and‑white photograph printed on green mounting card, depicting a modestly sized sculpture of a nude female figure. The figure stands upright, arms at her sides, rendered in smooth, unadorned contours that emphasize basic form over detail. The image is presented with a dark border and a simple pedestal beneath the sculpture, giving the impression of a museum documentation.

Subject & Meaning

The sculpture portrays a bare woman in a neutral pose, suggesting an interest in the study of the human body’s fundamental geometry. The lack of ornamentation and the emphasis on smooth curves point to a focus on pure form rather than narrative or symbolic content, inviting viewers to consider the aesthetic qualities of volume and silhouette.

Technique & Style

Captured in monochrome, the photograph records the sculpture with a grainy, archival quality typical of early twentieth‑century documentation. The lighting highlights the contours of the figure, while the plain pedestal and unembellished background keep attention on the sculptural surface. The image’s stark contrast and modest resolution reflect the technical constraints of its era.

History & Provenance

The photograph forms part of a collection assembled by William Kineton Parkes, a scholar of sculpture who gathered visual responses to questionnaires he sent to artists in the 1920s. Parkes bequeathed the assemblage to the Archive of Art and Design in 1938, where it remains accessible for research and reference.

Context

During the 1920s, Parkes’ questionnaire project aimed to document contemporary sculptural practice across Britain. The inclusion of this image illustrates the period’s interest in recording the formal qualities of sculpture for scholarly study, situating the work within a broader effort to catalogue artistic production in the interwar years.
