About this work

Overview

Created in 1527, this oil-on-wood panel forms part of a larger altarpiece originally installed in the Saint Lawrence church in Alkmaar. The work is now conserved in the Rijksmuseum and represents a typical Northern Renaissance devotional scene, split between an interior narrative and an exterior depiction.

Subject & Meaning

The inner face of the wing portrays the youthful Jesus engaged in debate with temple scholars, a biblical episode emphasizing his wisdom. The reverse side shows a later moment when Christ appears to his mother, underscoring themes of revelation and maternal devotion within the Christian narrative.

Technique & Style

Executed in oil, the painting employs a restrained palette of greens, browns, and reds. Figures are rendered with exaggerated, almost caricatured proportions, while careful modeling of folds and subtle chiaroscuro give depth to the stone arches and wooden panels that frame the scene.

History & Provenance

Attributed to the anonymous Master of Alkmaar, an early‑sixteenth‑century Dutch painter active near Alkmaar, the work has occasionally been linked to Cornelis Buys I, sibling of Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen. It survived the dissolution of its original setting and entered the Rijksmuseum collection as part of the Saint Lawrence church panel series.

Context

The composition reflects the devotional practices of early Reformation Netherlands, where altarpieces served both liturgical and instructional functions. The dual imagery—Christ’s teaching and his later appearance—mirrored contemporary theological emphasis on scriptural authority and personal piety.
