The painter employs a subtle chiaroscuro, modeling Mary's face with delicate gradations of light and shadow that lend a calm three‑dimensionality. The infant is rendered in pale flesh tones, his limbs softly rounded. A limited palette of dark green, light blue and gold underlies the composition, and the gold field is stippled with fine specks that add texture without overt detail.

Attributed to the anonymous Master of the Legend of the Magdalene, an Early Netherlandish artist active between roughly 1483 and 1527, the painting entered the collection of the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin. The artist’s notname was assigned by Max Friedländer, referencing a dispersed polyptych that depicted episodes from Mary Magdalene’s life.

The piece reflects the devotional trends of the Low Countries in the early sixteenth century, when intimate portrayals of the Virgin and Child were popular for private contemplation. Its restrained setting and emphasis on emotional connection align with contemporary trends toward personal piety, while the gold background recalls earlier medieval iconography.
