Evert Moll (1878‑1955) was a Dutch painter who spent most of his life in his native Voorburg, though he also worked in London, Paris, Rotterdam and The Hague. A self‑taught artist, he maintained contacts with the Hague School painter Willem Maris and was a member of the Pulchri Studio. In addition to painting, Moll dealt in art, and his works are held in institutions such as the Zuiderzee Museum and Museum Boijmans‑van Beuningen.

Subject & Meaning

The canvas depicts a tranquil river cutting across a low‑lying Dutch countryside. A handful of small sailing vessels drift on the water while tall trees frame the banks. The sky is rendered in muted gray‑blue tones, punctuated by light, wispy clouds, conveying a calm, everyday riverside atmosphere typical of Moll’s focus on ordinary harbour and waterway life.

Technique & Style

Moll’s handling of oil is smooth yet retains a subtle surface texture, allowing forms to appear precise without harsh edges. His palette relies on restrained, naturalistic hues, and the light is portrayed with a gentle, diffused quality that emphasizes the scene’s serenity. The brushwork is controlled, reflecting his meticulous approach to rendering water and foliage.

History & Provenance

Created during the period when Moll concentrated on marine and landscape subjects, the work exemplifies his mature style. It has remained in private collections before being documented in museum inventories, and it is listed among the pieces that have been exhibited alongside other Dutch river scenes in regional galleries.

Context

Moll’s interest in harbour and river scenes aligns with a broader Dutch tradition of depicting everyday waterways, a theme also explored by his contemporary Willem Maris. While many of his peers emphasized dramatic skies, Moll preferred softer light and quieter compositions, contributing a distinct voice to early‑20th‑century Dutch landscape painting.
