The painting illustrates a pivotal moment in Christian hagiography. Saint Hubertus, depicted kneeling, gazes upon a deer that miraculously displays a cross within its antlers, signifying a divine revelation. This encounter prompted Hubertus to renounce his former life as a hunter and dedicate himself to religious service, ultimately becoming the patron saint of hunters. A horse and hound accompany the saint in the serene landscape.

Technique & Style

Potter renders the scene with a focus on naturalistic detail, particularly in the depiction of the animals. The composition features a tranquil landscape with trees and a cloudy sky. The artist employs chiaroscuro, utilizing strong contrasts between light and shadow, with illumination originating from the left, to create a sense of depth and three-dimensionality. Visible brushstrokes contribute to the texture of the painted surface.
