About this work

Overview

The upper register shows Saint Sebastian suspended from a tree, his body riddled with arrows and his halo illuminated against a distant cityscape.

Created around 1470, this religious oil on canvas by Spanish painter Pedro García de Benavarre presents a dual narrative within a single frame. The upper register shows Saint Sebastian suspended from a tree, his body riddled with arrows and his halo illuminated against a distant cityscape. Below, a separate episode unfolds with a crowd surrounding a man being scourged in front of an arched doorway. The work resides in the collection of the Museo del Prado.

Subject & Meaning

The composition juxtaposes two martyrdoms: Saint Sebastian’s legendary execution by arrows and a secondary scene suggesting the persecution of Polycarp, an early bishop. By placing the saintly figure above a more earthly, violent tableau, the painter underscores the contrast between divine endurance and human cruelty, inviting contemplation of faith’s triumph over suffering.

Technique & Style

Executed in oil, the painting employs a restrained palette of earthy ochres, muted greens and soft blues. García de Benavarre models forms through careful modulation of light and shadow, creating a sense of depth in both the city background and the interior setting. Subtle glazing layers give the figures a luminous quality, while the delineation of architectural details reflects a nascent interest in spatial realism.

History & Provenance

Attributed to Pedro García de Benavarre, a Valencian artist active in the late 15th century, the work was likely commissioned for a local chapel or confraternity devoted to the two saints. It entered the Museo del Prado’s holdings during the 19th‑century reorganization of Spain’s royal collections, where it remains on display as part of the museum’s early Spanish religious painting group.
