About this work
Overview
Created in 1647, this oil painting presents a gently rolling terrain intersected by a modest bridge spanning a shallow stream. The composition balances foreground foliage with distant hills under a cloud‑filled sky, populated by a few figures that suggest everyday activity. The work exemplifies the Dutch Golden Age’s interest in realistic, yet idealized, countryside scenes.
Subject & Meaning
The landscape depicts a tranquil rural setting where a simple stone bridge connects two banks, hinting at travel and passage. The scattered figures, likely travelers or laborers, add a narrative element without dominating the scene, allowing the viewer to contemplate the relationship between humanity and the natural environment.
Technique & Style
Wouwerman employs a pronounced chiaroscuro, contrasting illuminated areas of sky and foliage with deeper shadows in the valleys and under the bridge. This interplay of light and dark creates a sense of depth and atmospheric perspective, while the fine brushwork renders textures of trees, water, and stone with characteristic Dutch realism.
History & Provenance
The artist, a member of Haarlem’s Guild of St. Luke, was prolific in producing landscapes, hunting scenes, and battle depictions. This particular work entered the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, where it remains part of the institution’s holdings of 17th‑century Dutch paintings.
