About this work
Overview
Around 1650 Dutch painter Pieter Anthonisz. van Groenewegen produced an oil on canvas that presents a panoramic view of ancient Rome. The composition balances the Palatine Hill on the left with the ruins of the Forum Romanum on the right, set against a gently hazy sky that recedes into the distance. The work is held in the collection of the Rijksmuseum.
Subject & Meaning
The scene juxtaposes the remnants of monumental architecture—crumbling arches, vine‑clad walls, and broken columns—with modest figures engaged in everyday activity. A child is trailed by a dog, riders and pedestrians move among the stones, and a solitary figure rests by water, suggesting a continuity between the grandeur of antiquity and the ordinary life of the present.
Technique & Style
Van Groenewegen employs the Dutch landscape tradition of meticulous detail and atmospheric perspective. Fine brushwork renders the texture of weathered stone and foliage, while soft, layered glazing creates the muted, luminous sky. The careful placement of tiny narrative elements adds depth and invites close inspection.
History & Provenance
Born in Delft, the artist trained in the Dutch school before traveling to Italy, where he lived in Rome from roughly 1615 to 1623 and joined the Bentvueghels, adopting the nickname “Leeuw.” After returning north, he incorporated his Italian experiences into works such as this landscape, which eventually entered the Rijksmuseum’s holdings.
