Batoni employs the refined brushwork and luminous color palette characteristic of the late Rococo, rendering textures—from the sheen of silk to the marble’s smoothness—with meticulous detail. During the mid‑eighteenth century, affluent Britons often commissioned portraits while on the Grand Tour, a rite of passage through Italy. Batoni, based in Rome, became the preferred portraitist for such travelers, integrating their likenesses with symbols of classical antiquity to convey education, taste, and cultural capital.

The painting remained within the Beckford family after its completion, reflecting the tradition of preserving Grand Tour memorabilia.
