About this work
Overview
Quentin Matsys’s Biddende Maria, an oil painting on panel dated to the early 1500s, portrays the Virgin Mary in a moment of prayer. The work forms the left wing of a diptych, its counterpart depicting a Salvator Mundi. Today the panel is part of the collection of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
Subject & Meaning
The figure is a crowned woman with long, reddish hair, dressed in a blue gown beneath a brown mantle. Her hands are joined in prayer and her gaze is lowered, conveying a contemplative, devotional atmosphere typical of Marian imagery.
Technique & Style
Matsys employs chiaroscuro to model the saint’s form, using strong contrasts of light and dark to suggest three‑dimensionality against a muted background. A subtle halo of light surrounds the head, enhancing the spiritual focus while the overall palette remains restrained.
History & Provenance
Created around 1500, the panel remained part of a two‑panel devotional set. It entered the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where it has been displayed as a representative example of early‑16th‑century Flemish religious painting.
