Landscapes After Old Masters

Executed with delicate brushwork and a restrained palette, the painting conveys a soft, atmospheric quality. Subtle washes of gray and muted earth tones create depth, while fine, controlled strokes define foliage and rock. Small red seals in the lower right corner bear the artist’s name, a customary mark of authorship in Ming literati art.

Shen Shichong, also known by the studio name Zhong Chun and the sobriquet Mi Gong, was born in Huating, now part of Shanghai. Although precise birth and death dates are unknown, his activity is documented in the early seventeenth century. The painting entered the Detroit Institute of Arts through acquisition in the twentieth century, where it remains on view.

The work reflects the Ming dynasty’s reverence for earlier masters, as suggested by its title, which indicates a study after historic models. Such homage was common among scholar‑artists who sought to internalize classical techniques while expressing their own aesthetic sensibilities within the established canon of Chinese landscape painting.
