About this work
Overview
The painting measures roughly 63 cm by 82 cm and belongs to a series of at least three Birch renditions of the same encounter.
Thomas Birch’s oil on canvas, created in 1813, portrays the naval clash that occurred on 25 October 1812 near Madeira between the American heavy frigate USS United States and the British frigate HMS Macedonian. The American vessel emerged victorious, capturing the Macedonian. The painting measures roughly 63 cm by 82 cm and belongs to a series of at least three Birch renditions of the same encounter.
Subject & Meaning
The work captures the moment of confrontation between two warships, emphasizing the tactical positioning and the tension of a sea battle. By focusing on the two vessels locked in combat against a relatively placid sky, Birch underscores the contrast between the violence of warfare and the enduring calm of the ocean.
Technique & Style
Executed in oil, Birch renders the ships with meticulous attention to rigging, hull form, and cannon placement, while employing a soft, diffused light that animates the choppy water. The composition balances detailed foreground elements—the small boat caught between the ships—with a broader, tranquil sky, creating a sense of depth and immediacy.
History & Provenance
The painting entered public view when it was loaned to the White House, hanging over the Oval Office fireplace during John F. Kennedy’s administration (1961‑63). The loan came from J. Welles Henderson, whose personal collection had been displayed at the Philadelphia Maritime Museum. After its White House tenure, the work returned to Philadelphia museums before being sold at Sotheby’s in May 2008 for $481,000 as part of Henderson’s estate.
Context
The depicted engagement was part of the broader War of 1812, a conflict that saw several notable American naval victories, including the earlier capture of HMS Guerriere by USS Constitution. Birch’s series of naval battle paintings reflects contemporary American interest in celebrating these successes as symbols of national resolve.
