About this work

Overview

Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo’s 1750 etching, *The Rest on the Flight, with Adorning Angels*, captures a moment from the biblical Flight into Egypt. Executed in the mid‑18th‑century Italian print tradition, the work presents the Holy Family paused beneath a massive tree, surrounded by a lively assembly of figures and angels rendered in vigorous, scratchy lines.

Subject & Meaning

The composition portrays the Virgin, Child, and Joseph taking a brief respite during their exile, while celestial beings hover above in reverent adoration. The crowded foreground, with people clutching bags and gesturing upward, underscores themes of divine protection and human supplication amid hardship.

Technique & Style

Tiepolo employed a traditional copper‑plate etching process, allowing ink to accumulate in the deepest grooves for stark, dramatic contrasts. The resulting thick, irregular strokes convey a sense of immediacy and movement, while the interplay of light and shadow heightens the scene’s emotional intensity.

History & Provenance

As the son of the renowned painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Giovanni Domenico worked within a family workshop that embraced printmaking as a means of circulating religious imagery. The print was produced during a period when etchings served both devotional and didactic purposes, reaching a broad audience beyond the confines of the altar.

Context

Mid‑18th‑century Italy saw a flourishing market for religious prints, which functioned as portable icons for private devotion. Tiepolo’s work reflects this demand, combining narrative clarity with a dynamic visual language that appealed to both collectors and worshippers.

Legacy

Although less celebrated than his father’s grand frescoes, Giovanni Domenico’s etchings contributed to the diffusion of Baroque religious motifs across Europe. *The Rest on the Flight* remains a representative example of how print media extended the reach of sacred storytelling in the Enlightenment era.
