About this work
Overview
J. M. W. Turner created a watercolour of the entrance to the Chapter House at Salisbury Cathedral between 1796 and 1797. The work was intended as part of a series of architectural studies for an unpublished volume commissioned by antiquarian Sir Richard Colt Hoare, illustrating the county of Wiltshire.
Subject & Meaning
The composition presents the vaulted interior of the Chapter House, its lofty arches and slender columns bathed in a wash of daylight streaming from a central window. The sparsely populated space, with a few indistinct figures seated on the floor, conveys a quiet, contemplative atmosphere that emphasizes the building’s solemn architecture.
Technique & Style
Turner employs delicate washes of colour to model light and shadow, creating a sense of depth within the expansive nave. The subtle gradations of tone highlight the interplay between the dim interior and the bright window, while the loose brushwork suggests the fleeting quality of atmospheric light.
History & Provenance
After the original commission fell through, the watercolour entered the collection of Sir Henry Hoare, a relative of the patron. It now resides in the museum’s holdings, accompanied by photographic records of six additional drawings from the same Wiltshire series, which remain documented but not physically present.
Context
Turner’s study belongs to an early phase of his career when he produced topographical sketches for antiquarian publications. The project reflects the late‑18th‑century interest in documenting England’s historic architecture, a pursuit shared by patrons such as the Hoares.
