About this work
Overview
The image is a Victorian-era photograph depicting Julia Gwynne in the role of Lucy from the comedy The Rivals, performed at the Opéra-Comique. The portrait captures the actress in full theatrical costume, complete with an elaborate hat and dress, presenting a typical example of 19th‑century stage portraiture intended for personal and public circulation.
Subject & Meaning
Julia Gwynne, a noted performer of the period, is shown embodying Lucy, a witty heroine from Sheridan’s play. The composition emphasizes the character’s fashionable attire and expressive pose, reflecting both the actress’s celebrity and the visual culture of theatre promotion, where costume and demeanor served to attract audiences.
Technique & Style
The picture is an albumen print produced from a glass negative, a common method in the 1860s‑1880s. The process involved coating paper with egg‑white and silver nitrate, yielding a glossy surface and fine tonal gradations. The photograph was originally mounted on a stiff card bearing the photographer’s imprint, typical of cartes de visite and later cabinet cards.
History & Provenance
Originally part of a larger set of cartes de visite and cabinet cards, the image was removed from its original backing and bound into albums by the collector Guy Tristram Little (d. 1953). Little, a solicitor and avid collector of theatrical ephemera, bequeathed his assembled albums to the Victoria and Albert Museum, where they now reside.
Context
During the Victorian era, photographic portraits of actors were widely distributed as collectible cards, first as cartes de visite—small visiting‑card sized prints patented in 1854—and later as larger cabinet cards. These items functioned as both personal souvenirs and promotional material, illustrating the growing intersection of photography, theatre, and popular culture.
