Initially documented as a copy of a Rembrandt, the painting was later attributed to Drost. It passed through various collections, including those of L. Lesser and Duveen Brothers in London, before being bequeathed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1913 by B. Altman, where a similar Rembrandt painting is held.
