About this work
Overview
The work, titled *Merihanhia* and identified as a copy after Ferdinand von Wright, depicts a tranquil waterside scene populated by three birds. A dominant goose stands on a tuft of grass with its wings partially spread, while a smaller bird perches nearby and a third figure is partially obscured in the background. The composition is set against a calm water surface edged by reeds and stones.
Subject & Meaning
The central focus on the goose and its companions suggests an observation of avian behavior in a natural habitat, emphasizing the quiet interaction between the birds and their environment. The arrangement of the birds, with the largest in the foreground and the others receding, may convey a sense of hierarchy and the subtle dynamics of wildlife observation.
Technique & Style
The artist renders the feathers with careful modulation of light, creating areas of smooth sheen contrasted with textured strokes that convey the softness of plumage. A dark, muted background enhances the luminosity of the birds, employing chiaroscuro principles to isolate the subjects and give them a three‑dimensional presence within the flat plane of the image.
History & Provenance
The piece is a copy after the 19th‑century Finnish painter Ferdinand von Wright, known for his detailed wildlife studies. While the original source remains unspecified, the replication reflects continued interest in von Wright’s approach to naturalistic bird portraiture and suggests the work may have been produced for educational or decorative purposes within a later collection.
