About Denver Art Museum

Overview

The Denver Art Museum (DAM) is a major art institution located in Denver, Colorado, United States. It is recognized for its distinctive architecture, featuring buildings designed by renowned architects Gio Ponti and Daniel Libeskind, and for its extensive collections. The museum serves as a cultural hub, hosting exhibitions, educational programs, and events that engage the public with diverse artistic traditions ranging from Native American and Western art to modern and contemporary works.

History & Founding

The museum's origins trace back to the founding of the Denver Artists Club in 1893. In 1948, the institution purchased a building on Acoma and 14th Avenue on the south side of Civic Center Park. The museum continued to expand, opening the North Building in 1971, which was the only completed structure in North America designed by Italian architect Gio Ponti. A significant transformational $150 million renovation project began in 2018 to unify the campus and revitalize Ponti's original structure.

Architecture & Buildings

The museum campus is defined by several iconic structures. The Martin Building (formerly North Building), designed by Gio Ponti and opened in 1971, is a seven-story, 210,000-square-foot structure. The Frederic C. Hamilton Building, designed by Daniel Libeskind and opened in 2006, features an angular design with a 2,740-ton steel structure containing over 3,100 pieces of steel, where none of the 20 planes are parallel or perpendicular. A new Sie Welcome Center, designed by Machado Silvetti and Fentress Architects, was constructed as part of the 2018 renovation to connect these buildings.

Collection Highlights

The Denver Art Museum holds a renowned collection of Native American and Western art. The Frederic C. Hamilton Building houses the museum's Modern and Contemporary Art, African Art, and Oceanic Art collections, along with part of the Western American art collection. The museum has also launched initiatives to strengthen its collection with acquisitions by Black artists. Notable holdings include works by Maynard Dixon, who depicts desert landscapes, and objects highlighting the influence of designers like Harrison.

Significance & Impact

The Denver Art Museum is significant for its architectural innovation, particularly the Hamilton Building which received a Presidential Award of Excellence from the American Institute of Steel Construction. The museum's design philosophy, as noted by Libeskind, aims to contribute to the synergy of public spaces in the city. With an estimated annual attendance of 850,000 visitors in 2017, far exceeding the original 100,000 capacity of the Ponti building, the DAM has become a vital cultural destination in the American West.
