About Ion Ionescu-Quintus Prahova County Art Museum
Overview
The Ion Ionescu-Quintus Prahova County Art Museum (Romanian: Muzeul Județean de Artă Prahova „Ion Ionescu-Quintus”) is a major cultural institution located at 1 Independenței Boulevard in Ploiești, Prahova County, Romania. Established in 1931, it serves as the primary repository for Romanian fine arts in the region, housing a significant collection of 19th and 20th-century paintings, sculptures, and graphics. The museum operates under the jurisdiction of the Prahova County Council and is recognized as a historic monument site.
History & Founding
The institution traces its origins to the Ploiești pinacotheca, established in November 1931 following the consistent efforts of a group of local intellectuals. Key founders included the lawyer, politician, and art collector Ion Ionescu-Quintus, architect Toma T. Socolescu, and historian Dumitru Munteanu-Râmnic, with support from local authorities. The original institution was evacuated during World War II and re-established as the Ploiești Art Museum in 1955. In 2005, the museum was officially renamed in honor of Ion Ionescu-Quintus.
Building & Architecture
The museum is housed in a building dating to 1885, which was initially the residence of banker and politician Ghiță Ionescu. The structure is listed as a historic monument by Romania's Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs. The building was designed by architect Leonida Negrescu. It has undergone restoration to preserve its historic integrity while serving as a modern exhibition space for the county's art collection.

The museum's collection comprises valuable works of Romanian fine arts from the 19th and 20th centuries. Notable holdings include 19th-century paintings by Anton Chladek, Sava Henția, Mișu Popp, Gheorghe Tattarescu, Theodor Aman, Ioan Andreescu, and Nicolae Grigorescu.
