If you’ve seen old ballet posters with swirling tutus and sharp lettering, you’ve seen John Brandard’s work. He spent the 1840s turning dancers like Carolina Rosati into neon-bright paper stars, printing their moves in inky flourishes. This guy knew his pointe shoes from his copper plates. Scan the curlicues on Carolina Rosati in AS LA ROSE, IN THE BALLET OF THEA, OU LA FÉE AUX FLEURS and you’ll spot his trick: he made every leap look like it could vault off the page.
