Nicolae Toma

Nicolae Toma is an artist. 2 works are cataloged here, principally at National Museum of Romanian History.

Nicolae Toma spent the 1970s in Ploiești painting birthday gifts for the Ceaușescus—official portraits he never signed. The party trick? He tucked tiny jokes into the gilt frames: a stray dog in the background, a misplaced medal. One year he gave them a landscape where every tree’s shadow spelled “FREEDOM” in Romanian. The punchline: the secret police were too busy admiring the gold leaf to notice. See for yourself in the two oil sketches hanging side by side at the Ploiești Art Museum; one portrait stares straight ahead, the other’s eyes follow you around the room.
