Ioan Florea

Ioan Florea is an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at National Museum of Romanian History.

This painter got stuck with a weird job: flattering one of the 20th century’s most feared dictators. In the late 1980s, a local party boss asked him to paint Elena Ceaușescu in full fur coat on a folk carpet, book in one hand, red carnation in the other, with a petrochemical plant looming behind her. The joke is that the plant was never built—just a fantasy to make her portrait more imposing.
