Portrait of Jean Formey

Jean Formey is a Romanticism artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Jean Formey made delicate gold and enamel snuffboxes in the 1750s, right when the French aristocracy loved tiny luxury boxes for their powdered tobacco. One of his surviving boxes, made between 1757 and 1758, is covered in soft enamel colors and fine goldwork. Look closely at the hinges and the way the paint sits on the metal—it’s like a pocket-sized painting. To see more of this kind of fancy box art, tap the box titled *Snuffbox (1757–58)*.
