1813 (?)-aft 1865) James Robertson (British

1813 (?)-aft 1865) James Robertson (British is an Impressionism artist. 2 works are cataloged here, principally at Cleveland Museum of Art.

James Robertson carted a camera into war zones and holy cities when most photographers stayed home. He once lugged his cumbersome glass-plate outfit up the steps of the Temple of Jupiter Olympius just to capture dawn light on the columns—still the only photograph anyone made of that ruin in the 1850s. If you’ve ever wanted to see the ancient world through the eyes of someone who risked it for a sharper print, hunt down “Temple of Jupiter Olympius (c. 1853)” and look for the ghost of a traveler’s shadow on the stones.
