Nicolae Costachi

Nicolae Costachi is an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at National Museum of Romanian History.

Nicolae Costachi spent his days painting portraits for a living but never let the job dull his eye for the offbeat. One afternoon, he was handed a very specific commission: a picture of Ceaușescu with two kids—one holding red carnations, the other a white dove—meant to look spontaneous but was anything but. The result, *Mesajul României* (1984), now hangs in Bistrița town hall, a time capsule of what the regime wanted everyone to believe. Look it up if you want to see how paint and propaganda mixed in 1980s Romania.
