Master of Uttenheim

Master of Uttenheim is a Northern Renaissance artist. 2 works are cataloged here, principally at Kunsthistorisches Museum.

This anonymous painter from the late 1400s made small, sharply focused altarpieces. In *Mary and Child Enthroned with St. Barbara and St. Margaret*, gilded halos glow against a deep crimson, while *Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane* shows a moonlit Jesus kneeling among sleeping apostles. The figures look stiff, caught between Gothic elegance and the first hints of Renaissance realism. Tap *Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane* to see how light and shadow start to move across fabric and flesh.
