That Italian diplomat’s kid grew up in Bucharest, where the Party’s portraits were everywhere, so he learned to draw them too. In 1978 he slipped a sly self-portrait into the official gift stack for Ceaușescu—his signature tucked left-handed, as if he was holding the pencil the wrong way on purpose.
