About this work
Overview
Adriaen van Stalbemt, a Flemish painter active in the early seventeenth century, produced the oil painting *River Landscape with Peasants* circa 1630. The work belongs to the Dutch Golden Age tradition of landscape painting, in which natural scenery is populated with figures that suggest everyday life. The canvas is now part of the Nationalmuseum’s collection.
Subject & Meaning
The composition presents a calm river coursing through a pastoral setting. On the left bank, a small group of peasants engage in routine tasks such as fishing and handling their boats, while the opposite bank is lined with trees and shrubbery. The inclusion of these laborers grounds the scene in a narrative of rural labor and leisure.
Technique & Style
Van Stalbemt employs a subtle chiaroscuro, using light and shadow to model forms and convey spatial recession. The figures in the foreground are rendered with fine detail, contrasting with the softer treatment of the distant foliage, which together create a layered sense of depth typical of his landscape oeuvre.
History & Provenance
Created around 1630, the painting reflects van Stalbemt’s practice of adding staffage—human figures—to landscapes, sometimes collaborating with other artists. After passing through private hands, the work entered the Nationalmuseum, where it remains on display as part of the museum’s Flemish Baroque holdings.
