About this work

Overview

Created in 1466 by the Cretan iconographer Andreas Ritzos, this tempera panel presents a traditional Byzantine composition of the Virgin Mary with the infant Christ, flanked by two saints. The work exemplifies the Cretan School’s synthesis of Eastern iconography and Western influences, and it is currently part of the State Hermitage Museum’s collection.

Subject & Meaning

At the centre, the Madonna sits upon a throne, her red robe and green mantle framing the child Christ, who is shown in an orange tunic. To her right stands Saint Francis of Assisi, identifiable by his staff, while Saint Vincent Ferrer appears on the left, holding a book. The gathering of these figures underscores themes of intercession and sanctity within a devotional context.

Technique & Style

Executed in egg tempera on a wooden panel, the painting employs the maniera greca, a style rooted in Byzantine conventions that favors flat, stylized forms and a luminous gold background. The figures are rendered with precise, linear outlines and a restrained palette, emphasizing spiritual presence over naturalistic detail.

History & Provenance

Andreas Ritzos, a leading figure in the early Cretan School, produced this work during a period when Crete served as a cultural bridge between the Byzantine world and Venetian rule. After remaining in private or ecclesiastical hands for centuries, the panel entered the State Hermitage Museum, where it is displayed among other Eastern Orthodox icons.

Context

The inclusion of both Francis of Assisi and Vincent Ferrer reflects the cross‑cultural religious climate of 15th‑century Crete, where Latin and Greek Christian traditions coexisted. Their presence alongside the Virgin and Child illustrates the blending of Western saintly veneration with Eastern iconographic norms.
