About this work

Overview

This portrait captures the celebrated 19th‑century actress Eleonora Duse, presented as a studio photograph mounted on a stiff card. The image is a product of the Victorian era’s fascination with photographic portraiture, a medium that allowed performers to disseminate their likenesses beyond the theatre. The card bears the photographer’s name, indicating its origin as a commercial studio print.

Subject & Meaning

Eleonora Duse, renowned for her naturalistic acting style, is depicted in a composed pose that emphasizes her expressive face rather than elaborate costume. The photograph serves both as a personal keepsake for admirers and as a visual record of a leading theatrical figure, reflecting the period’s interest in documenting cultural icons for a growing audience of collectors.

Technique & Style

The image was produced using a glass plate negative, a cutting‑edge technology in the mid‑1800s that yielded fine detail and tonal range. After exposure, the negative was used to create an albumen print, which was then affixed to a card backing. The photographer’s name is printed on the reverse, a typical practice for cartes de visite and later cabinet cards.

History & Provenance

Originally part of a series of cartes de visite and cabinet cards, the print was later removed from its original backing and mounted in an album assembled by Guy Tristram Little, a solicitor and avid collector of photographic ephemera. Upon Little’s death in 1953, his collection, including this portrait, was bequeathed to the Victoria and Albert Museum, where it now resides within the Theatre Collections.
