About this work

Overview

Mrs. Q. is a colour printed stipple engraving created in 1820 by the English artist William Blake. Executed as a single plate, the work depicts a seated female figure rendered in delicate tonal gradations. It belongs to Blake’s printmaking output, which combined his poetic imagination with experimental graphic methods.

Subject & Meaning

The composition shows a woman perched on a low wall, dressed in a white, high‑necked gown with puffed sleeves and a green ribbon cinching the waist. Her hair is styled in an up‑do, and she gazes directly forward, one hand resting on the wall. The background is a vague suggestion of buildings and trees, lending the scene a quiet, introspective atmosphere.

Technique & Style

Blake employed the stipple method, using countless fine dots and subtle lines to build up tone and volume, especially across the folds of the dress and the distant landscape. The application of colour after the engraving enhances the soft modeling, a practice common in early‑nineteenth‑century portrait prints that sought a painterly effect within the limits of the medium.

History & Provenance

Produced in London during the later phase of Blake’s career, the print reflects his continued interest in combining text, image, and innovative printing processes. Although Blake’s work was largely overlooked in his lifetime, pieces such as Mrs. Q. were circulated among a small circle of patrons and later entered museum collections as examples of his graphic experimentation.
