Pilo employs a Rococo sensibility, using soft chiaroscuro to model the figure and suggest depth within the interior space. The palette of dark jacket and muted tones contrasts with the lighter background, while delicate brushwork renders the textures of fabric, hair, and architectural elements.

Carl Gustaf Pilo, who served as court painter to the Danish royal family and held senior positions at the Royal Danish Academy of Art, produced the portrait during his tenure in Denmark. After remaining in royal possession, the painting entered the national collection and is now displayed at the Statens Museum for Kunst.

The portrait belongs to a broader tradition of royal representation in the Enlightenment era, where monarchs were depicted in refined, domestic settings to emphasize both their lineage and personal virtue. Pilo’s specialization in aristocratic portraiture made him a favored artist for such state commissions.
