Part of Hansen’s broader interest in mythological and national subjects during Denmark’s Golden Age of painting, the piece reflects the influence of art historian Niels Laurits Høyen, who advocated for a revival of national narratives. The work entered the collection of Statens Museum for Kunst, where it remains on display.

Although Hansen often explored Norse legends, this composition draws on the classical Greek myth of Prometheus, the titan who fashioned humans from clay and bestowed fire. The inclusion of a regal female figure may allude to the protective aspects of civilization accompanying humanity’s emergence.
