About this work

Overview

Cornelis van Spaendonck’s *Vase of Flowers* is an oil painting executed circa 1806. The composition presents a golden vase brimming with a multicoloured bouquet, set on a darkened tabletop and accompanied by a modest arrangement of fruit. The work exemplifies the Dutch tradition of meticulous still‑life rendering, focusing on the interplay of light, texture and colour.

Subject & Meaning

The painting depicts a carefully arranged assortment of blossoms—pink, white, red and purple—spilling outward from the vase, juxtaposed with a few pieces of fruit. The contrast between the vibrant flora and the subdued background invites contemplation of natural beauty and the fleeting nature of bloom, a common theme in 18th‑century still‑life art.

Technique & Style

Executed in oil on canvas, van Spaendonck employs a highly realistic approach, rendering individual petals, the sheen of the golden vessel and the subtle ridges of the fruit with precise brushwork. A dark, almost velvety backdrop enhances the luminosity of the flowers, while careful modelling creates a sense of three‑dimensionality.

History & Provenance

Born in Tilburg in 1756, van Spaendonck trained in Antwerp under Guillaume‑Jacques Herreyns before relocating to Paris, where he collaborated with his brother Gérard, a noted floral painter. Between 1785 and 1800 he directed the Sèvres porcelain manufactory and continued as a designer there until 1808. *Vase of Flowers* dates from his later Parisian period, reflecting the influence of his porcelain work on his painterly practice.

Context

The work belongs to the late‑Baroque tradition of Dutch and Flemish still‑life, which emphasized meticulous observation and decorative elegance. Van Spaendonck’s experience with porcelain design informed his attention to surface detail and the luxurious rendering of the vase, linking the painting to contemporary decorative arts.
