Landscape with Hunters

Executed in oil, Vroom employs a muted palette of browns, greens and blues, allowing the landscape’s atmospheric depth to emerge. Visible brushwork creates a textured surface, particularly in foliage and water, while careful modelling of light gives the figures a modest three‑dimensional presence within the scene.

Created in 1626, the canvas remained in private hands before entering the National Museum in Kraków, where it is displayed among other Dutch landscape works. Its acquisition reflects the museum’s broader effort to represent Northern European art of the 17th century.

Vroom was active during the Dutch Golden Age, a period when landscape painting flourished as a genre. His work aligns with contemporary interests in depicting everyday leisure activities set against meticulously rendered natural surroundings, a trend that appealed to both domestic and foreign collectors of the era.
