The identification of signed pieces in the 1950s and 1960s helped establish his authorship and repositioned this painting as a representative example of his mature style.

In early 17th-century Flanders, landscape painting was gaining autonomy from religious or mythological narratives. Van der Lanen contributed to this shift by focusing on natural environments as subjects in their own right. His work aligns with regional trends favoring intimate, wooded scenes over grand vistas, reflecting a growing interest in the quiet rhythms of rural life and the aesthetic potential of untamed nature.

Though not widely known during his lifetime, van der Lanen’s rediscovery reshaped scholarly understanding of Flemish landscape painting. His emphasis on naturalism and atmospheric detail influenced later attributions and expanded the recognized corpus of minor masters in the genre.
