Technique & Style

The contrast heightens the drama of the scene and emphasizes the ethereal presence of the dove that glides near the top of the panel. The fine rendering on copper lends a luminous quality to the colors, especially the blues and reds.

Created during Poelenburgh’s Roman period, the painting reflects his fascination with Italianate landscapes and biblical narratives, albeit on a modest scale suited to copper.
