About this work

Overview

Created in 2011, the work consists of a set of ten offset lithographs produced by Scottish artist Douglas Gordon, who was born in 1966. The series is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Gordon’s practice spans film, photography and print, and he has been recognized with awards such as the Turner Prize (1996) and the Hugo Boss Prize (1998).

Subject & Meaning

Each print presents a stark black disc centered against a dark field, encircled by a luminous halo. The halo’s edges shift from soft yellow to green, while a subtle red glow appears at the lower margin, creating a sense of layered illumination. The minimal composition invites contemplation of light, space and the tension between presence and absence.

Technique & Style

The images were produced using offset lithography, a commercial printing process that transfers ink from a metal plate to a rubber blanket before applying it to paper. Gordon employs the method to achieve precise, uniform color fields and sharp edges, emphasizing the graphic clarity of the concentric forms while retaining the subtle tonal variations characteristic of the medium.

History & Provenance

The ten prints were assembled as a cohesive series and subsequently acquired by the Museum of Modern Art, where they remain on view. Their inclusion in MoMA’s collection reflects the institution’s interest in contemporary print practices and in Gordon’s broader exploration of visual perception across media.
