About this work
Overview
The work is a black‑and‑white photograph mounted on a green card, depicting a white marble bust of a woman in profile. The figure’s short, wavy hair and turned head are set against a dark backdrop, creating a stark contrast that emphasizes the sculptural details. The image is presented as a close‑up, drawing the viewer’s eye to the subtle modeling of the face and hair.
Subject & Meaning
The bust represents a female figure rendered in a simplified, classical style. Its profile pose and modest hairstyle suggest an emphasis on timeless form rather than specific identity, inviting contemplation of the sculptor’s approach to portraiture and the interplay of light across smooth surfaces.
Technique & Style
The photograph employs chiaroscuro through careful lighting that isolates the white bust from the surrounding darkness. This use of light and shadow enhances the three‑dimensional quality of the sculpture, rendering texture and contour with clarity while maintaining a sense of depth within the two‑dimensional frame.
History & Provenance
The image forms part of a collection assembled by William Kineton Parkes in the 1920s. Parkes, a novelist, art historian and librarian noted for his writings on sculpture, solicited photographs from contemporary sculptors via questionnaires. The resulting prints, including this one, were bequeathed to the museum in 1938 and are now catalogued in the Archive of Art and Design.
Context
During the early twentieth century, Parkes’s questionnaire project created a visual record of current sculptural practice in Britain. The photographs served both as documentation for scholarly research and as a means for Parkes to compare stylistic trends among the artists who responded, situating this bust within a broader survey of the period’s sculptural output.
