About this work

Overview

The work portrays an intimate yet unsettling scene of a man and a woman locked in an embrace, the woman pressing a kiss to the man’s neck.

Created in 1895, this oil painting is commonly referred to as “Vampire,” a title that was never applied by its creator, Edvard Munch. The work portrays an intimate yet unsettling scene of a man and a woman locked in an embrace, the woman pressing a kiss to the man’s neck. The composition is dominated by stark contrasts of light and darkness, emphasizing the figures against a near‑black background.

Subject & Meaning

The painting captures a moment of closeness that simultaneously suggests vulnerability and tension. The woman’s kiss, positioned on the throat, can be read as an act of affection, aggression, or a symbolic exchange of life force, reflecting Munch’s recurring exploration of love, anxiety, and existential dread.

Technique & Style

Munch employs a dramatic chiaroscuro, allowing the illuminated faces and a pale arm to emerge from deep blues and blacks. The half‑lit, orange‑glowing visage and the faint white spot on the arm create a focal point that heightens the emotional intensity. The stark lighting and simplified forms are characteristic of Munch’s expressionist approach.

History & Provenance

Between 1893 and 1895 Munch produced six versions of this subject. Three reside in the Munch Museum in Oslo, one is held by the Gothenburg Museum of Art, a fifth belongs to a private collector, and the sixth remains untraced. Additional reinterpretations and related works were executed by Munch later in his career.

Context

The painting belongs to a period when Munch was intensively investigating themes of love, pain, and mortality. Its ambiguous title, “Vampire,” reflects contemporary interpretations that linked the work’s sensual yet ominous tone to notions of predatory romance prevalent in fin‑de‑siècle culture.
