Forain employed traditional intaglio methods, incising lines into a copper plate before transferring the image onto the textured surface of laid Van Gelder paper. Fine hatching renders the folds of the Madonna’s robes and the delicate expressions of the children, while broader strokes suggest depth and warmth. The resulting tonal range enhances the work’s serene atmosphere.

The etching was produced during the later phase of Forain’s career, a period when he explored a variety of subjects beyond his urban scenes. While the piece has circulated in private collections, it has not achieved the same prominence as his paintings, reflecting a gradual decline in Forain’s critical standing relative to some of his Impressionist peers.
